What effects does censorship have on us?This week we began Tuesday talking about censorship. We did a webquest to find out the positive and negative side effects of censoring as well what and why people censor. This led us to our reading of an excerpt from Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451". After reading this we compared and contrasted the main characters homes as well as their viewpoints on burning the books. We created graphics with text evidence that showed our understanding of the theme. We ended the week with a unit 1 test on Friday. All in all, it was a great (short) week!

I am very excited to welcome you all to Team WHITE English Language Arts. In our first week we went over my classroom expectations, getting to know one another, and diving into our first big question "why does reading matter?" We first questioned "Why does reading matter?" and had students practice the inquiry process for challenge based learning. On Thursday, we read letters published in Jim Burke's book "I Hear America Reading" and analyzed those different letters. Lastly, to end out our first week, we did a graded letter writing assignment, where the students wrote to me explaining their past experiences with writing, as well as their hopes for this year and what reading means to them. We had a great first week! If your student did not already let you know, they do need a novel to read before lunch in "SSR" or "Silent Sustained Reading."
The next week we looked at a passage from "The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass" entitled "Learning to Read and Write". We discussed his innovative ways of learning to read and write as well as his struggle to learn. In addition, we looked at an NC Bill from 1840 that banned the teaching of slaves. We related all of this back to the power of being able to read and write. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! As a reminder, we had having a vocabulary quiz this Tuesday and our first test Friday (September 11). |
